Overview

The Analyst Training Program (ATP) devotes itself to the rigorous training of qualified individuals toward certification as Jungian Analysts. This program is post-graduate in nature. A minimum of four years is required to complete the ATP, and the program includes academic, clinical, and analytical features.

Each candidate must complete a minimum of 500 classroom hours covering a diverse and wide-ranging curriculum; each also receives clinical supervision throughout the program. Unlike other types of psychological training, a candidate trained in analytical psychology must also undergo personal analysis throughout the program (including a minimum of 100 hours prior to application). In this way certification is not only the result of a training philosophy and methodology that emphasizes theoretical mastery as well as clinical skill and experience, but one that also requires rigorous self-exploration. A brochure is available upon request.

Elements

Personal Analysis

In the tradition of C.G. Jung, who first recommended to his psychoanalytic colleagues that every analyst should be analyzed,
the core of analytic training is the personal analysis. The aim is to develop as a mature, psychologically conscious person through a meaningful connection with the personal and collective unconscious. Prospective trainees are required to have 100 hours of personal analysis before applying, and when admitted to continue in a minimum of weekly analysis throughout training.

The analytic relationship is considered confidential—no communications are required or accepted from the trainee’s personal analyst, who also is not allowed to serve on any of the trainee's evaluative committees. Trainees are encouraged to work with both a male and a female analyst sometime during their training.

Course Work

The theoretical portion of the ATP is anchored in a four-year curriculum that covers five major areas, including

  1. an extensive review of the literature of analytical psychology, especially the reading of the essential writings of C. G. Jung,

  2. the Jungian understanding of personality and psychopathology,

  3. the practice of Jungian analysis,

  4. techniques for the engagement and interpretation of the unconscious, and

  5. archetypal material.

These basic areas of analytical psychology are assessed through an oral and written examination, a thesis exam, and an exam on the clinical work with the control cases. All courses are structured to fit three, ten-week quarters (no summer courses) and are held on Tuesdays between 12:00 noon and 9:00PM at the Institute.

Supervised Clinical Work

Trainees participate in weekly group and individual supervision with an analyst as well as individual practice consultation. In the final years of training, a senior analyst supervises the trainee weekly.

After entering the Control Phase of training, the trainee contracts for control supervision and writes up two cases to present for a final case exam. During this phase, the trainee also presents his/her control cases at three case colloquia.

Training Weekends

All trainees attend two training weekends a year where guests or CSJA analysts present material in their area of expertise.

Assessment of Progress

Supervisors, monitoring committees, and exam committees closely evaluate the progress of training. The monitoring committees (Admissions Committee, Candidacy Committee and Certifying Committee) are composed of analysts in the Chicago Society. Once a year, they conduct individual and group interviews with each trainee. Advancement to the next stage of training occurs only after the relevant committee recommends advancement. At any point during training, the monitoring committees may recommend termination from the program. Examination committees are composed of two members from the CSJA and a guest analyst from another IAAP approved society. The Training Committee oversees the entire Analyst Training Program.

Training Stages

Three formal stages encompass the period of training, which typically spans four to seven years.

  1. Preliminary Stage.  During this phase, the trainee and the training community mutually discern the capability of the trainee to be a Jungian analyst. At the successful completion of this stage, trainees are fully admitted to the training program.

  2. Candidacy Stage.  During this phase, the trainee broadens and deepens his/her understanding of the theoretical foundations and archetypal roots of analytical psychology, while advancing his/her clinical practice in the direction of more analytic work. This phase concludes with a five-part oral and written Propaedeuticum Examination that assesses competency in the theory and practice of analytical psychology.

  3. Control Stage.  During this phase the candidate focuses on the development of his/her clinical/analytical work with clients,
especially the clients chosen for control supervision, while broadening and deepening her/his understanding of analytical
psychology. A minimum of 100 hours of control supervision is required in this phase.

Certifying Exams

The process of the two-year or 150 hour (minimum) analysis for each control case is described in a fifty-page review and
presented to an examining committee of three analysts—two from the Chicago Society and one IAAP (non-CSJA) member. A final diploma thesis of approximately 100 pages is also prepared and presented to a separate thesis examining committee of three analysts—the thesis advisor, another CSJA member, and an IAAP (non-CSJA) member. This thesis is expected to demonstrate the trainee's ability to explore in-depth an analytic topic of personal and clinical significance.

Admissions

The following criteria are used in the admission process.

Personal Analysis

Prior to applying for training, an applicant must have reached a level of personal maturity and psychological development that will minimize the possibility of personal complexes interfering with the success of the professional training and practice of analysis. It is assumed that the applicant will examine carefully with the personal analyst his/her psychological readiness to begin analytic training. In the past the most successful candidates have had considerably more than the required minimum of 100 hours of analysis within the immediately previous five years with a member of IAAP.

Degree

The level of training to be an analyst presupposes a thorough knowledge of the general field of psychotherapy. Deficiencies may be identified at the time of admission and the applicant may be asked to fill the deficiency before being advanced to candidate status. As a minimum the applicant must possess a graduate degree in a psychotherapy field (Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Work, Pastoral Counseling, Psychiatric Nursing, Counseling) from an accredited college, university or professional school.

Psychotherapy Experience

The applicant is expected to have substantial experience practicing psychotherapy, preferably with seriously disturbed persons in a multidisciplinary setting. He/she should be able to assess the depth and danger of the dynamics presented by a patient/client relationship.

State Licensure

The applicant shall be licensed to engage in independent clinical practice in the state in which he/she practices.

Basic Knowledge of Analytical Psychology

The applicant should have a basic familiarity with the fundamentals of analytical psychology, demonstrated through personal reading or attendance at public education programs.

Respect for Symbolic

The applicant must have a deep personal respect and appreciation for the symbolic function of the psyche, the unconscious depths of the psyche, and individuation.

Malpractice Insurance

The applicant shall document adequate malpractice insurance coverage.

Analytic Consultation

Additional Information and applications for admission are available from the Director of Training at the C.G. Jung Institute of
Chicago. The materials for application will also contain an explanation of all supporting documents that must accompany the
application (e.g., transcripts, letters of recommendation, certification of hours of analysis, proof of liability insurance, etc.) A
